A little farther east along King Street is the State House Stop 6. This is the oldest building in Bermuda. Built in 1620 by Governor Nathaniel Butler in the Italian style, it was the House of Assembly and the location of the principle court during the time when St. George was Bermuda’s capital. Today, the house is leased to a Masonic lodge for an annual rent of one peppercorn per year. The ceremony of payment is held in April and has become one of the town’s major celebrations. The State House is open to the public on most Wednesdays from 10am until 4 pm.
